Severe Cost Burden
$25,750 is the maximum income level to qualify for extremely low income for a family of 4. Over $45,500/yr. is necessary to afford a 2-bedroom rental home at HUD’s Fair Market Rent.
There are over 100,000 renter households in Nevada that are extremely low income. This represents approximately 21% of the market. Rents increased almost 23% in 2021 and there is a shortage of housing for this market of more than 84,000 homes.
According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, there is a nationwide shortage of more than 7 million affordable homes for the country’s more than 11 million extremely low-income families. 81% of extremely low-income households have severe cost burden.
This means this population is spending 30% or more of their area median income on housing. Many households are spending more than 50% of their income on housing. There is a growing population of people that are spending over 70%-80% of their income just to keep a roof overhead.
Nationwide, extremely low-income households that have a single caregiver is about 14%. Half work more than 20 hours a week. 30% of extremely low-income households are seniors and 16% are disabled. Renters in this situation are forced to sacrifice basic necessities such as healthy food and health care to pay rent.
They also experience constant and unstable housing situations like evictions. With few options to improve their situation, this population continues to grow because very few are able to climb out of this vicious cycle. Some will eventually end up homeless while others continue the day to day struggle just to keep their head above water.
How Does My Donation Help?
Your donation helps us in 2 ways. First, we are able to help build an income source for those that want a pathway to improve their condition. Everyone from the disabled to the elderly can compete on the level playing field of the digital economy to reach their goals.
If they can send a text or email, your donation allows us to train this population and provide computer/phone resources to help them create a monthly stimulus or employment for themselves.
Second, your donations helps us to begin moving people into temporary housing. There are several options for this approach already on the market. Tiny homes, container homes and new innovations in home design, opens the door to new possibilities to build affordable housing on a large scale.
Your donations help pay for prototypes to prove the scalability of our approach. The prototypes also draw attention to the fact that “right now” solutions are available and can be implemented on a large scale to serve the homelessness and affordable housing options.
The New Gig Market
Affordable housing is closely tied to economic opportunities for the Disenfranchised. Many are priced out of the market because of rent increases, background or work history.
The Covid pandemic forced the entire globe to shift into a more remote, digital economy a lot faster than expected. The end result was a lot of companies discovered they were more efficient for less cost. Zoom meetings and working from home are still the norm in many businesses.
Social entrepreneurs are the next wave of innovation for employment and business ownership in the digital economy. A social entrepreneur is an individual, business or organization, that participates, supports and/or promotes economic and social solutions for disenfranchised communities.
As an apprentice, our clients receive hands on training in all aspects of digital marketing including promotion, content creation, podcasts, website design, coding and much more. Our clients also receive ongoing business training and credit management complete with business mentors for guidance and questions.
Through strong community support and innovative ideas, we are partnering with communities and organizations across the country to create affordable housing solutions in their city.
The economic impact of our strategy is greater tax generation, large scale job creation, new social entrepreneur development, improved credit scores, opportunities for economic development, increased job retention and productivity from this population.
Re-imagined social services leads to much more efficient delivery of necessary services including mental health. Affordable housing solutions decreases the number of evictions, creates a downward trend in crime and clears a pathway to self-sufficiency for others to follow.
